The RTLS/ RTSS systems available till date are either based on IEEE802.11x or IEEE 802.15.4 based Zigbee network. Based on our application requirement, we have opted for solely IEEE 802.15.4 standard.
RTLS/ RTSS solutions are based on Device-to-Device network formed by tags, localizers/routers and gateways. It does not require transferring high volume of data over the network. On the contrary, it requires only periodic transmission of small packets and beacons form tags and localizers. Therefore, high bandwidth network like IEEE 802.11, which is basically suitable for high volume data transfer, is overkill for an RTLS system.

Since tags in our system are battery-operated; therefore, low-power devices are definitely a better choice to increase their battery life as opposed to IEEE 802.11x devices that are generally power-hungry because of high bandwidth support.
IEEE 802.15.4 standard compliant devices are low-power and low data rate that exactly match our requirement.
PervTrack RTLS & RTSS solutions are based on proprietary network layer that takes care of fault tolerant locating with embedded power management scheme. IEEE 802.15.4 based network is formed autonomously as soon as any such devices are powered up. Prior manual configuration is not required for a wireless device to become a part of an existing IEEE 802.15.4 based network. This enables our system easily maintainable – just replace the faulty device in the network and the network will continue to function without any interruption. Mesh network inherently takes care of locate failure by sending packets via other available paths to a destination
